Happy Cuppa Coffee Day!

By Janice Surlin
(September 29—National Coffee Day)

This post is dedicated to my mother,
of blessed memory, who loved her coffee!
The week after she passed at 98,
she “communicated” that she could
“go for a cup of coffee”— enough evidence for me!
—————————————–

Known for patriotic and holiday songs,
And other memorable music he wrote—
This coffee ditty by Irving Berlin,
Mom liked singing and here l shall quote:

“Just around the corner
There’s a rainbow in the sky—
So let’s have another cup of coffee,
And let’s have another piece of pie!
Trouble’s just a bubble,
And the clouds will soon roll by—
So let’s have another cup of coffee
And let’s have another piece of pie!”
Java, Joe or Jitter Juice,
A drink by any name—
A morning cup will perk me up,
And many feel the same!

Perked or dripped,
French pressed or steeped,
Any way it’s brewed—
Enjoy at home or on the way,
To face the day renewed!

The claims of coffee’s benefits
I understand are true—
According to Johns Hopkins,
The ways it might help you:
(“3 to 5 cups”—moderation is the key)

Starting with our DNA,
Dark roast has this effect—
Decreasing breakage of these strands,
Might reduce results of this defect;

Research also indicates
Long-term memory may be increased—
May lessen developing Alzheimer’s,
A great possibility, at least!

Apparently our liver
Derives benefits from coffee too—
People who drink regular, or even decaf,
May have better enzyme levels
Than those who don’t drink coffee do;

A cup or two of java
It is said may help the heart
To ward off failing when it’s weak,
And has difficulty pumping blood
Through every body part;

This item is for women,
Who drink at least a cup a day,
Seems associated with lowering risk of stroke,
A good reason to sip, I say;

Chance of getting Parkinson’s
May be lower with caffeine—
May also help those who have it
Better control their movements,
It’s been seen;

When it comes to longevity,
Studies actually do show
That being rich in antioxidants,
Life extension could be lurking
In every cup of joe!

September has another date,
It was when my parents wed—
For their heavenly anniversary,
I’ll reserve cloud nine
And a gourmet celestial spread!

Staying in this heavenly realm,
Coffee often called the Nectar of the Gods,
The Elixir of Life, Liquid Intelligence too,
Terms I won’t explore but give a knowing nod!
